CONSERVATION FOR CUB SCOUTS

You have the power to change the world! Yes, you as a Cub Scout can change the world! And these Cub Scout Awards are here to help teach you how!

Cub Scout World Conservation Award

The World Conservation Award

The World Conservation Award
The World Conservation Award is worn on the uniform shirt,
centered on the right pocket as a TEMPORARY patch.
Only ONE Temporary patch may be worn at a time, but Cub or Webelos Scouts may wear the Progress Through Ranks (Immediate Recognition) or Webelos Compass Points Emblem suspended from the right pocket button in addition to any temporary patch sewn on the pocket.

The World Conservation Award provides an opportunity for individual Cub Scouts to "think globally" and "act locally" to preserve and improve our environment. This program is designed to make youth members aware that all nations are closely related through natural resources and that we are interdependent with our world environment.  The Cub Scout version of the World Conservation Award can be earned by Wolf or Bear Cub Scouts, and by Webelos Scouts.  This award can be earned only once while you are in Cub Scouting  (i.e. as either a Wolf Cub Scout, a Bear Cub Scout, or as a Webelos Scout).

As a Wolf Cub Scout, you can earn the Cub Scout World Conservation Award by doing the following:  Complete achievement #7 - Your Living World. Complete all Arrow Points in 2 of the following 3 Electives: #13 - Birds, #15 - Grow Something or #19 - Fishing. Participate in a den or pack conservation project, in addition to the above.

As a Bear Cub Scout, you can earn the Cub Scout World Conservation Award by doing the following: Complete achievement #5 - SHARING YOUR WORLD WITH WILDLIFE Complete all requirements in 2 of the following 3 electives: #2 - Weather, #12 - Nature Crafts or #15 - Water and Soil Conservation. Participate in a den or pack conservation project in addition to the above

As a Webelos Scout, you can earn the Cub Scout World Conservation Award by doing the following: Earn the Forester activity badge. Earn the Naturalist activity badge. Earn the Outdoorsman activity badge.  Participate in a den or pack conservation project.

The Conservation Good Turn Award

The Conservation Good Turn Award
This is an awesome way for your son's unit to both "Clean up America" and to earn an award for his pack. Your son's den or pack would partner with a local organization and help them to perform age appropriate tasks to help that agency with their work. Please see the section on Agency phone numbers and contacts to help get your unit started. This will require oversight by parents/unit leaders to keep tasks age appropriate.

The William T. Hornaday Unit Certificate

W. T. Hornaday

The William T. Hornaday Unit Certificate
There may come a time when your son's den or pack is invited to help a Scout to work on his Hornaday award.  The projects that your pack may do should help to fulfill rank advancement requirements as well as to help your son see scouting in action.  It may be that your son's pack builds nesting boxes for water fowl that the scout will distribute or that they will help to clean up a park or deliver pamphlets regarding a recycling initiative.  The list of ways your son's pack can help are endless, and so long as your son's unit has at least a 60% participation, your Pack will receive the award. Please see the Hornaday Page for more details.

National Historic Trails

National Historic Trails
We are also very fortunate to have 3 National Historic Trails here in Michigan.  Each of them is appropriate for Tiger and Cub Scouts.  Our council maintains one of them, and that is the Chief Pontiac trail.  The Gerald Ford Council in Grand Rapids, MI operates the President Ford Trail.  The Great Sauk Trail Council in Ann Arbor, MI operates the Potowatami Trail.  All three councils award patches to cubs, participating in their trails.  Please see the Trails Page for more information on them.
